There's an app for that?
This space will look at available software that is designed, or can be used, to mitigate or document a legal concern. If it doesn't exist, it will be created. These general areas will be explored initially:
- AntiFearon™ - mobile device encryption controlled by the
owner, no third party keys (forcing you to unlock it would be akin
to forcing you to open a locked safe - possible self-incrimination,
custody and control evidence).
First looks: Android 5.0 (has OEM "master key"), real-time face recognition using device hardware, capacitance / fingerprint from touch components, plausible deniability (false data stores).
Concerns: Kernel driver trust, signing. XTS AES 192 vs available CBC AES 128, key storage in RAM, identify side channel attack avenues outside multi-core data paths, TPM, boot block manipulation, watchdog, JTAG.
Legal issue: Possession is still nine tenths of the law despite section 24(2) of the Charter. - HushChat™ - peer-to-peer, federated, encrypted communications using web standards (SMS uses a third party, as do phone calls and video chat)
- HotSeat™ - surreptitious audio and/or video recording with optional, real-time transfer to remote storage. Let's face it, people lie.
- Frockheads, marsupials, and stars on the ceiling - Martin's mobile Criminal law, for Jane and Joe sixpack. Offline data store, online update, searches, citations.
